Registration in Zanzibar

Nov 15, 2013

The United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) is providing technical and programmatic support to Electoral Management Bodies in Tanzania under the Democratic Empowerment Project in preparation for the 2014 constitutional referendum and the 2015 general elections. The main implementing partner for the multi-donor support in Zanzibar is the Zanzibar Election Commission (ZEC). Under the DEP Project, ZEC is currently undertaking the registration of new voters and updating the Permanent Voters Register (PVR) in preparation for the upcoming constitutional referendum. The registration exercise was preceded by a series of voter education seminars at regional and district levels for various stakeholders. The sensitization seminars were aimed at enhancing electoral awareness among citizens and specifically encouraging people to turn out for voter registration.

By end of the registration exercise in Unguja one of the two main islands making up Zanzibar, ZEC had successfully registered a total of 30,994 new voters in all the 6 Districts of Unguja. Registration in Pemba Island will continue from 12th October 2013.
