- "After my husband died 10 months ago we fell on hard times. But our situation got worse with the drought and saline intrusion from El Niño. All our rice and vegetables died. We had taken out several loans for our farm and we lost everything”, said Nguyen Thi Nuong, from rural VietNam. Elderly and in poor health, she is still recovering from the collapse of her house during Typhoon Durian in 2006. Before the drought, her family owned nearly half a football field of land for cultivation. However, to cover the cost of more than 100 million VND (US$4490) of bank loans she was forced to sell more than two thirds of the land, and now rents it back for 30 million VND (US$1,350) a year. 20 hours ago
