The Conservation and Management of the Forests of the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania

The Project is jointly implemented by UNDP and the World Bank.  The World Bank provides GEF assistance to two components namely:  An endowment fund and institutional development in the forest sector. UNDP provides GEF support to two components: A Conservation Strategy for the Eastern Arc as a whole, and to pilot field conservation activities in the Uluguru Mts, in Morogoro Region. 

The project has six components as follows:

  • A holistic Eastern Arc Conservation Strategy, which addresses the overall Vision for the Eastern Arc Mountain Forests, and is based on individual mountain block strategies and District strategies; is developed, approved and under implementation
  • A set of thematic strategies for biodiversity conservation are developed and implemented – through both macro frameworks and individual management plan processes
  • Sustainable financing strategies are developed and under implementation
  • Adaptive monitoring programmes developed and under implementation
  • A socio-economic monitoring programme developed that links to the PRSP and livelihoods
  • Information, education and communication strategies (IEC) developed and implemented

 

Status The project is in its 4th year of implementation. The project implementation period is 5 years,

Outputs, Targets,Out Comes, Objectives

Some of the outputs include:

1. Improved Management and Protection systems in the Catchment Forest Reserves (CFRs) and biodiversity and hydrological values better understood.
2. Joint Forest Management and Other Resources use arrangements established.
3. Capacity of local communities in sustainable land use management enhanced.
4. Selected opportunities for income generation in the Uluguru mountains developed (emphasizing sustainable use of forest resources.)
5. Conservation awareness increased at all levels (through education campaigns politicians, schools, opinion leaders and local communities).
6. Social Economic Programme around the people interface and broader livelihood issues developed and under implementation.
